EDUCATION IN CONFLICT-AFFECTED AND FRAGILE ENVIRONMENTS

The event is being organized as part of a Global Meet-Up of the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE). INEE is a global network created by the United Nations to raise international awareness of the needs and challenges of education in conflict-affected and fragile states. The INEE advocates for children's rights to safe and quality education in crisis settings, and develops policy and practice guidelines for "conflict-sensitive" educational provision among conflict- and crisis-affected populations. Two of the main guidelines developed by the INEE include the INEE Minimum Standards for Education and the Conflict-Sensitive Education Toolkit. Among the themes for panel presentations and discussions are the following:
. Challenges and opportunities of education in conflict-affected and fragile environments;
. Educational policy, access, and provision in conflict-affected and fragile settings;
. Educational purposes and 'conflict-sensitivity' in conflict and post-conflict settings;
. Researching in conflict-affected and fragile environments;
. Issues of religion, identity, socialization, and memorialization in conflict-affected educational settings;
. Youth, citizenship and human rights in conflict-affected and fragile settings;
. Teacher education and teacher identities in conflict-affected and fragile environments;
. Armed conflict, gender and education;
. Arts-based approaches to education in conflict-affected settings;
. Links between academic research and applied solutions educational challenges in conflict-effected and fragile regions.
The programme will consist of a roundtable panel discussion and break-out group discussions:
